DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Could Ronald Guzmán be a late bloomer like former Rangers DH/OF Nelson Cruz was?
Cruz was once believed to be a Four-A player (a minor leaguer who had a lot of success in Triple-A but couldn't ever translate it to MLB), but turned his career around in 2009 when he exploded for 33 home runs at 28 years-old.
Guzmán, 26, doesn't hit for the same amount of power that Cruz proved he could in the minors, but he has shown flashes of his potential at the plate.
Guzmán enters the season, just like Cruz once did, with no minor league options remaining. He'll either make the opening day roster or the club will be forced to place him on waivers.
The first-baseman knows how important this season and transformed his entire swing this offseason.
“I have learned that the more I have my head in baseball, the better I'm gonna feel and the more comfortable I am on the field,” Guzmán said, via MLB.com. “I just feel like a whole different player. I didn't see the intensity. And then [in the Dominican Winter League] I feel like I was aware of everything that was going on on the field. That's just something that clicked.”
Guzmán ended up winning the Dominican Winter League MVP after hitting .360/.450/.523, and now, he's looking to continue that success at the plate with the Rangers this spring.
