DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Another intriguing player from the Rangers farm system is on his way back to Arlington.
The Rangers have placed outfielder Eli White on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right wrist and have called up outfielder Leody Taveras from Triple-A Round Rock for his third stint in the big leagues.
White was injured when he and left fielder Charlie Culberson crashed into each other on a fly ball in the 11th inning of Sunday's 8-6 win over Chicago. Subsequent X-rays confirmed the fracture.
According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, White will be shut down from throwing for six weeks, and he's not expected to return until September at the earliest.
The 23-year-old Taveras has batted .294/.335/.485/.820 with seven home runs, 12 doubles, 3 triples, and 29 RBI over 49 games with Round Rock this season. He was the Rangers’ April Minor League Player of the Month after batting .377 for the first month of the year, and he compiling a 17-game hitting streak from April 16-May 8.
After hitting just .202 over 84 at-bats in May, Taveras has heated back up in June, slashing .314 in 34 at-bats.
Taveras has seen Major League action in each of the last two seasons with Texas, and he is in the starting lineup for Monday night's series opener against the Astros at Globe Life Field.
Though he has exhausted his rookie and prospect status, Taveras was a back-to-back selection as the Rangers’ top prospect in 2017-18 by MLB.com.
The 23-year-old has been overmatched at the plate in his 293 career at-bats with the Rangers, as he has just seven home runs, 15 RBI, and a .188 average. But his improvements this season have the organization believing that he'll be ready to make an impact when he gets another opportunity.
And now's the time.
