Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray's matinee start ended early after he was hit on the left leg by a comebacker off the bat of Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning.

After being looked at by the Rangers training staff, Gray got back on the mound and went through the motions of throwing a pitch without actually releasing the ball. He eventually exited the field with a slight limp and was replaced by left-handed reliever Brock Burke.

The Rangers announced later Wednesday that the right-hander suffered a bruised left shin, and X-rays were negative.

Gray allowed eight hits through 4 1/3 innings of work, but no runs scored. Texas led 1-0 when he left the game.
