Report: Rangers top prospect Josh Jung suffers shoulder injury

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Rangers top prospect Josh Jung has been put on the shelf after suffering a left shoulder injury, according to Levi Weaver of The Athletic.

Jung experienced shoulder discomfort last week while lifting weights and the team elected to shut him down. Subsequent examinations determined that he suffered a labral strain. No timetable has been set for his return to the field, and he'll be further evaluated next week.

Jung was expected to compete for the starting job at third base in spring training. However, it's unknown when the season may begin, as MLB and the Players Association have yet to come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement.

MLB announced the cancelation of spring training games through March 4 on Friday after their latest negotiation lasted only 15 minutes.

Jung, the Rangers' 2019 first-round pick out of Texas Tech, hit .326 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock in 2021.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a strong option to start at the hot corner when the season opens should Jung not be ready to join the big league club.
