Report: Rangers top prospect Josh Jung undergoes shoulder surgery

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Rangers top prospect Josh Jung underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder Wednesday morning, the club announced in a statement.

According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Jung will need six months of rehab until he can be utilized as the team's designated hitter in games.

Jung was shut down two weeks ago after he experienced shoulder discomfort while lifting weights. The organization said at the time that he had suffered a strained labrum.

Jung was expected to compete for the starting job at third base in spring training, but that position will now likely go to utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa, barring any future moves the club makes when and if the lockout comes to an end.

Jung, the Rangers' 2019 first-round pick out of Texas Tech, hit .326 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock in 2021.
