DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - In a sudden turn of events, the Rangers have traded infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for catcher Mitch Garver, the club announced Saturday. Minnesota will also receive right-hander Ronny Henriquez in the deal.
105.3 The Fan's Jared Sandler breaks down the trade in the video above.
The trade is stunning due to the fact that less than 24 hours ago the Rangers said that Kiner-Falefa was the club's starting third baseman.
The trade leaves the Rangers with a hole at third base heading into spring training. Utility man Andy Ibanez can be penciled into that spot for now, but the 28-year-old only is entering his second year in the big leagues and started just 11 games at the hot corner in 2021.
Kiner-Falefa, 26, has spent his entire four-year career with the Rangers. He hit .271 with eight home runs and 53 RBIs last season.
In exchange for Kiner-Falefa, the Rangers get a big bat at the catcher position in Garver. The 31-year-old hit 31 home runs in 2019. He only played in 23 games during the shortened 60-game season in 2020, and appeared in just 68 games last season due to a variety of injuries.
