The Yankees have officially acquired more infield depth, acquiring Rougned Odor from the Texas Rangers for minor-league outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers.
The Yankees are also receiving cash considerations, with reports stating that Texas is likely to be picking up the majority of the money remaining on the six-year, $49.5 million extension Odor signed with Texas back in 2017.
Odor has struggled in recent seasons and was recently designated for assignment by the Rangers after losing the starting second base job and then the third base job. The 27-year-old slashed just .167/.209/.413 last season, and in 2019, he led the league with 178 strikeouts while batting .205, but he did show power in the form of 30 home runs. He has hit at least 30 home runs in three of the last five seasons, but only batted over .250 twice.
Odor’s WAR as a second baseman over the past four seasons is the lowest among players with at least 1,000 plate appearances at the position, per FanGraphs.
The Yankees will have to make both a 25-man and 40-man roster move to accommodate Odor, as neither player sent to Texas was on the 40-man.
Cabello, 20, was an international signee in 2017, and did not play last season. He spent 2019 at Advanced Rookie-level Pulaski, hitting .211 in 56 games, and he has a career .251 average in 102 games across multiple rookie-level affiliates.
Stowers, 24, also did not play in 2020. He was Seattle's second-round pick in 2018, and hit .260 in 58 games at Short-Season Class-A Everett. The Yankees acquired him in January 2019 for infielder Shed Long - who had just been acquired from Cincinnati for Sonny Gray - and Stowers spent 2019 at Class-A Charleston, slashing .273/.386/.400 with seven home runs, 40 RBI, and 35 stolen bases in 105 games.
