Even before Zach Wilson has played in a regular season NFL game, Tony Romo believes that this year's No. 2 overall pick has a chance to become one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

Romo -- who spent his entire NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys before being paired with Jim Nantz on CBS' lead broadcast team in 2017 -- said during a conference call Wednesday that he believes Wilson has a chance to be in the ballpark with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes:

With some digging, we found a clip from last month where Romo compared Wilson to Hall of Famer Dan Marino:

While the Jacksonville Jaguars seemingly didn't seriously consider taking Wilson over Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick, there were some that believed after watching Wilson's final year at BYU that he was the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the 2021 class, or pretty damn close.

An anonymous NFL scout told Matt Miller of The Draft Scout in February that he believed Wilson was a better prospect than Lawrence and compared him to Mahomes.

In March, former NFL quarterback and current NBC analyst Chris Simms said that while he thought Lawrence was an excellent prospect, Wilson was "clearly" the No. 1 quarterback in this past NFL Draft. Simms added that he saw qualities of Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers in watching Wilson's collegiate tape.

Simms' NBC colleague Cris Collinsworth said in late April that he "really hesitated" to rank Wilson behind Lawrence, also comparing him to Rodgers.

Expecting any rookie to come in and have a career comparable to Marino, Rodgers or Mahomes isn't fair. But when there's smoke from this many plugged-in people, you have to think there will be some fire from Wilson as he looks to help turn the Jets around.
