(670 The Score) The Padres turned an improbable double play to get out of a jam against the Cubs on Wednesday afternoon, but it came at a steep price.

With the bases loaded and one out in a 1-1 game in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cubs catcher P.J. Higgins lofted a fly ball into shallow left field. Padres shortstop Ha-seong Kim and left fielder Tommy Pham both tracked the ball and then collided in a scary incident. Kim dropped the ball in the collision, but he still had the presence of mind to quickly fire it back to third baseman Manny Machado on the infield, where the Padres completed what went down as a 6-5-4 double play as confused Cubs baserunners Rafael Ortega and Eric Sogard didn’t advance, believing the ball had initially been caught. The third-base umpire did properly signal safe to note the ball wasn't caught. Because the Padres executed two forceouts on the play, the Cubs’ run from third base didn’t count.

Pham was bleeding as he left the field with the inning over. Both Pham and Kim exited the game with injuries.
