The New York Yankees announced Wednesday that they have placed infielder Rougned Odor on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain, and recalled RHP Albert Abreu from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Odor was injured on a collision at the plate with Martin Maldonado in the sixth inning of Tuesday's win over the Astros. He laid on the ground for a while after colliding with the catcher, then was helped off the field, but eventually was seen walking in the dugout on his own power.
Boone admitted the injury looked serious at first, but it appears Odor has avoided missing significant time. The team expects to know just how long Odor will be out in the near future.
"We should know that tonight when Dr. Ahmad physically examines him tonight," Boone told reporters on Wednesday. "He does have that minor sprain. I think all things considered, we kind of lucked out. I think you saw my reaction and jumped onto the field because it looked ugly to me right away. I was pretty concerned."
The Yankees said postgame that he would be taken for an MRI and further testing, which revealed the sprain. Odor's injury likely means some more playing time for Tyler Wade, at least until Luke Voit returns from his rehab assignment in Triple-A, which could happen on the team's next road trip.
"Wade could get in there some," Boone said. "Again, that will be a day-by-day decision. I like what Tyler brings in his versatility off the bench. Maybe in the next week we’ll have Luke in the mix. That changes the dynamic a little bit. But it will be day by day based on matchup and things like that."
Odor was hitting .164 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games this season. Abreu has been up and down from the Alternate Site to the majors this year, and has allowed one run and struck out three over two innings.
Boone said he expects Odor's absence to be "on the shorter side."
