Last season, the future of the Ravens coaching staff was in flux even with an AFC North title. Rumors spiraled that the Ravens could part ways with head coach John Harbaugh as well as the Ravens promoting Greg Roman to offensive coordinator last January.

The decision to sign Harbaugh to a four-year extension was followed by Roman’s promotion and the Ravens haven’t looked back. A huge reason for his promotion last January in Baltimore was due to other team’s interest in Roman.

With the Ravens offense taking the league by storm in Roman’s first full season as offensive coordinator, the Ravens should extend him before its too late.

Baltimore's offense this season leads the NFL in scoring, tallying 33.3 points per game. The Ravens rank 2nd in football with 421.7 yards per game and lead the league with 197.2 rushing yards per game.

Of course Roman has a ton of talent at his disposal. His determination to pound the football is complimented with a speedy dual-threat quarterback, a variety of distinct backs, and hybrid tight ends.

However for Roman, success on the ground is nothing new. Before Baltimore, he established dominant ground games in San Francisco and Buffalo. His ability to enhance quarterback’s production in Colin Kaepernick and Tyrod Taylor has proven to follow him in Baltimore.

Keeping Roman as offensive coordinator is crucial to Jackson's development as a quarterback as well as the success of the Ravens moving forward.
Roman's impact on Jackson cannot be understated, as the 22-year old is coming off back-to-back AFC Player of the Week honors and is in the MVP conversation.

Here's where Greg Roman coordinated offenses have ranked in points per drive (QB in parenthesis)2019 1st (Lamar Jackson)2016 9th (Tyrod Taylor)2015 11th (Tyrod)2014 22nd (Colin Kaepernick)2013 12th (Kaepernick)2012 9th (Kaepernick/Smith)2011 12th (Alex Smith)

Before Roman, the Ravens hired six different offensive coordinators since 2012. But that’s not to say none of them worked out. Remember when Gary Kubiak served as the OC in 2014? The Ravens ranked 12th in total yards, fifth in rushing yards, and eighth in scoring. The Ravens planned on bringing him back yet lost Kubiak to a head coaching position in Denver.

With Greg Roman likely to become a top head coaching candidate in his own right, the Ravens should sign him to a long-term extension to keep him paired with Lamar Jackson and the offense.

#Ravens OC Greg Roman deserves to be 2020’s No. 1 HC candidate* Longtime elite run-game designer* Tailors offense to fit personnel rather than forcing “mah scheme”* Overseen Kap, Tyrod, Lamar career years* Forward-thinking hire exposed to edges analytics provide in Baltimore

With less than a year together, just think how much better the Ravens offense could be with multiple seasons together.

Roman’s complex schemes, along with the tremendous skillset in Baltimore, have provided nightmares for opposing defenses.

13 year vet Marshal Yanda on Greg Roman: “he’s got the biggest playbook I have ever seen. He’s got a ton of stuff. We do a ton of stuff to keep defenses on edge, every single week he’s going to throw new wrinkles at them, keep them honest.“ #Ravens

There has been no indication on whether or not the Ravens have spoke to Roman regarding an extension. That said, if the past taught us anything, the Ravens should secure their dynamic offensive coordinator this time around and keep him in Baltimore for the foreseeable future.
