The Orioles fought hard on Wednesday afternoon against the Yankees, but they dropped the season finale against New York 6-5.
Earning the sweep, the Yankees have now won 16 straight games over Orioles dating back to March 31 when Baltimore topped New York 7-5.
"It doesn't feel great," manager Brandon Hyde said after the game. "I like the way we fought today, I thought we competed. I love the way we came back again. We're just a little short at times. Not a good feeling walking out of here having losing that many in a row to them."
This might be beating a dead horse, but the home run ball played a big role in the Orioles latest defeat. Gary Sanchez's three-run jack in the first inning off an 84-MPH Dylan Bundy change-up made it a 4-1 game after Aaron Judge crossed home on a single from Didi Gregorius. Sanchez's dinger marked the 61st and final long ball the Yankees tallied against the Orioles this season, which is a record-setting total.

— Mark Viviano (@MarkWJZ) August 14, 2019Sanchez will finish the season with 10 home runs against Baltimore. The crazy part is that Gleyber Torres racked up 13 against the Birds in 2019, which also holds special company in the record books.
After Sanchez's homer, Bundy retired 16 of the next 17 batters. He registered the first two outs of the sixth inning, but then surrendered a single to Sanchez and a double to Gleyber Torres.

Richard Bleier came on and, after walking Mike Tauchman, yielded a two-run single to Mike Ford that plated New York's final two runs. Both runs were charged to Bundy.
Baltimore added three runs in the seventh inning, but seven of their last nine batters were retired. Renato Nunez delivered a five-hit game, including a two-run double in the seventh. Jonathan Villar knocked in two on a double and a single. Pedro Severino collected an RBI on the day with a single in the third frame.

Now that the Orioles (now 39-82) are done in New York, their schedule lightens up a bit. After an off-day on Thursday, the O's will begin a three-game series at Fenway Park Friday night at 7:10 pm. The Birds are 2-2 in Boston and have not played there since early April. The last series of the season for the Orioles will also be held at Fenway from Sept. 27-29.
