Another week, another preseason win for the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens earned their 15th straight preseason victory in 26-13 win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. While wins and losses are completely irrelevant in the preseason, the games offer a chance to evaluate position battles and players fighting to make the 53-man roster.
Here is a look at my standouts.
FB/DL Patrick Ricard
The Ravens are considered one of the best teams at finding undrafted talent and Patrick Ricard quietly has been a fantastic addition. Following a strong performance on the defensive line against the Jaguars, Ricard led an impressive rushing attack at fullback as the Ravens finished with 171 yards on the ground. He even recovered a fumble early in the third quarter.
It's safe to assume Ricard's spot on the 53-man roster is secure. He's the team's starting fullback for a run-oriented offense and can provide valuable depth on the defensive line. That versatility is a rare combination in today's NFL.
RB Justice Hill
Mark Ingram III and Gus Edwards are expected to carry the rushing load, but it's hard not to get excited about Justice Hill. The rookie third-round pick led the offense with 10 rushes for 49 yards and his first career touchdown.
Hill was the fastest running back in the rookie class and he's going to be a problem for opposing defenses. He's extremely elusive and dangerous in the open field and has the leg strength to earn extra yards after contact. I'm intrigued to see how Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman will use Hill in the offense, and it's hard not to expect some kind of role after a strong performance tonight.
QB Lamar Jackson
It's clear Lamar Jackson has improved as a passer since his rookie season, but tonight he reminded us all why he's a one-of-a-kind talent. On a 3rd-and-10 late in the first quarter, Jackson scored an incredible 18-yard touchdown that was nullified by an illegal crackback block from Willie Snead IV. Nonetheless, it was a thing of beauty. Jackson juked one defender and hurdled another into the end zone.
You probably don't want your starting quarterback risking his body on a run like that during the preseason, but it shows just how elusive Jackson is. His running ability is special and will be a key aspect of the Ravens' offense this season.
LB Otaro Alaka
After Chris Board left the game with a concussion, undrafted rookie linebacker Otaro Alaka took full advantage of his opportunity. He led the defense with six total tackles, two of which came for a loss. Board's preseason could be over for precautionary reasons and the Ravens are already thin at inside linebacker. It's just one game, but if there's a path for an undrafted rookie to make the 53-man roster, Alaka could certainly make his case.
