For the first time since Adam Duvall accomplished the feat in 2020, a player has driven in nine runs in a ballgame.
The latest was Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.
Mountcastle hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and then singled in the bottom of the third to drive in his second run of the game. That was the last at-bat where Mountcastle was driving in runs one at a time.
In the bottom of the fifth Mountcastle belted a three-run home run. After grounding out in the sixth, he launched a 456-foot grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.
According to Sarah Langs, Mountcastle joined Eddie Murray and Jim Gentile in Orioles history.
As the Orioles finalized their 12-8 victory over Oakland, Mountcastle stood atop all MLB hitters with 18 RBI in the young 2023 season. Only 20 hitters have reached double digits in runs driven in.
Mountcastle passed the rest of the league in one night.
