Report: White Sox trade Eloy Jimenez to Orioles

(670 The Score) The White Sox have agreed to a trade that will send designated hitter Eloy Jimenez to the Orioles, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Tuesday afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the White Sox were set to receive from the Orioles, but the deal was primarily to get salary off Chicago’s books, according to multiple reports. The White Sox were expected to receive a low-level prospect in return.

Jimenez, 27, was hitting .240 with five homers, 16 RBIs and a .642 OPS in 65 games for the White Sox this season. He joined the White Sox organization in 2017 as part of the return in a trade that sent left-hander Jose Quintana from the South Side to the Cubs on the North Side.

Jimenez arrived to much fanfare and displayed great power in hitting 31 homers for the White Sox in his rookie season in 2019, but he was plagued by injury again and again and his production waned in recent years. He was also nearly unplayable defensively, which relegated him to the designated hitter role in an organization with too many of those player types.

Jimenez is making $13.8 million in 2024. His contract includes a club option for 2025, which the Orioles will surely decline.
