The Washington Capitals re-signed Marcus Johansson to a one-year, $1.1 million contract, capping off a flurry of activity by the club on the first day of free agency.

The 31-year-old forward recorded 29 points (9 goals, 20 assists) in 69 games between Washington and the Seattle Kraken last season, including six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in 18 games for the Capitals.

Johansson was acquired by Washington in March in exchange for forward Daniel Sprong, a 2022 fourth-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick on March 21, marking his second stint with the Capitals. He was drafted by Washington in the first round (24th overall) in 2009 and played seven seasons for the Caps before being traded to the New Jersey Devils in July 2017. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound forward recorded 290 points (102 goals, 188 assists) in 501 games during his first stint with the Caps.

Johansson is one of only 30 players in franchise history to play 500 games for the Capitals. He's recorded 407 points (144 goals, 263 assists) over the course of his 12-year NHL career. He has 43 points (14 goals, 29 assists) in 103 career playoff games, including four game-winning goals and an overtime game-winner with the Caps.

A Swedish native, Johansson has represented his home country in the Olympics, winning a silver medal in 2014, and the World Junior Championships, winning a bronze medal in 2010 and a silver medal in 2009.
