The Capitals have acquired a trio of future draft picks and forward Craig Smith in a trade with the Bruins that will send defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway to Boston, the team announced Thursday night.
The Capitals acquired a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft, a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft in the deal. Washington will retain 50 percent of Orlov's salary as part of the trade, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan says.

"We would like to thank Dmitry and Garnet for their contributions to our organization," said MacLellan. "Dmitry has been with our organization for almost 14 years and was a key contributor in helping us win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Garnet has been an important part of our team and a role model off the ice for his contributions to our community. We wish both players all the best with Boston."
"This trade allows us to acquire draft capital, infuse youth and restock our system," MacLellan said. "While this season has proven challenging with injuries to our significant players, we are in a position to use some of our current assets to retool our club and build a competitive team moving forward."
The Capitals now have six picks in the 2023 draft, including two first-round picks and three total picks in the first two rounds, the team notes, including owning their own first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks, in addition to Boston's first-round pick in 2023.
They now also own seven selections in the 2024 NHL Draft, including their first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh-round picks, in addition to Boston's third-round pick. They currently hold eight selections in 2025.
Smith, 33, has tallied 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in 42 games with the Bruins this season. The 6-foot-0, 204-pound forward has reached the 20-goal mark in five of his 12 NHL seasons and has recorded a positive plus/minus rating in 10 straight seasons.
Orlov, 31, has recorded 256 points (60 goals, 196 assists) in 686 career games with the Caps and was a member of their 2018 Stanley Cup championship squad. He was drafted by Washington in the second round (55th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft.
Hathaway, 31, has recorded 76 points (38 goals, 38 assists) in 257 games with the Capitals. He originally signed with Washington as a free agent in 2019.
Both Orlov and Hathaway have expiring contracts, meaning the Caps at least acquired assets as opposed to losing them for nothing later.
The Caps are currently in 11th place in the Eastern Conference and on the outside of the playoffs looking in.
