John Feinstein: Carbery was the right hire for Caps, and Ovi will be okay

The Capitals are 12-6-2 through 20 games and riding a two-game West Coast winning streak, and when John Feinstein joined The Junkies on Friday, he admitted that he didn’t know much about Spencer Carbery when the Caps hired him, but it looks early on like the right choice.

“Carbery has obviously done a very good job,” Feinstein said. “He appears to be a very good hire, and someone told me that during the offseason, six different teams were interested in hiring him, so his reputation was good – and that’s shown up. Two straight west coast wins is nothing to sneeze about.”

They’re doing it all while not scoring much, which is fine for now – although one has to wonder if the drought will be prolonged for Alex Ovechkin, whose chase for 895 has just five goals in 20 games.

“For Ovi…20 games is a quarter of the season, but I think at some point he’ll break out and have something like eight goals in 12 games,” Feinstein said. “When I watch him skate, he looks like he’s still skating well, but he’s 38 years old and everyone slows down eventually. Some people take longer than others, so concern might not be the word, but watchful of what he’s doing might be the word – not just on the ice, but psychologically he misses Backstrom, and now probably knows that he’s not coming back. What has happened in the last month leads me to believe that at some point they’ll announce he’s retiring, and pick a date to put his number in the rafters.”
