Alex Ovechkin came into this season with 822 goals, 72 shy of tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record of 894 – and most figured that even with a little decline at age 38, Ovi was a shoo-in to get there as early as 2025.
However, here we are more than halfway through the 2023-24 season and Ovechkin enters Wednesday’s 46th Caps game with eight on the season – still 64 behind Gretzky and not even on pace to reach his career low of 24, which came in the truncated post-COVID 2020-21 season.
