It’s been a week since self-proclaimed “genetic freak” Jose Canseco lost his Rough ‘N Rowdy bout with Barstool Sports intern Billy Football in a “fight” that lasted all of five seconds. Canseco’s defeat was so immediate that many, including Barstool founder Dave Portnoy, hypothesized the former MLB All-Star never had any intention of fighting and simply used Barstool for a quick—and apparently quite lucrative—payday.
While the prevailing sentiment is that Canseco’s Rough ‘N Rowdy stunt was exactly that—an elaborate con masterminded by an attention-starved ex-celebrity fallen on hard times—the 56-year-old insists that’s not what happened. A week after the fiasco that was Rough N’ Rowdy, Canseco is sticking to his story that injuries—not greed or any other ulterior motives—were to blame for his pitiful performance in West Virginia.
It seems losing in humiliating fashion has done little to deter Canseco or his engorged ego with the former A’s slugger continuing to hide behind flimsy excuses. Suppose we take Canseco’s account of what occurred at face value. If Canseco’s retelling of events is accurate, the ex-Bash Brother is essentially admitting his steroid-ravaged body crumbled before our eyes. I’m no pillar of physical fitness myself, but even from afar, dislocating your shoulder and blowing out a knee in a matter of seconds seems hard to do. If Canseco’s ailing body was in as dire shape as he claims, doesn’t that make what he did even more unethical, deceiving Barstool into booking a badly-injured boxer who clearly was in no condition to fight?
Delusional as he may seem, you have to admire Canseco’s unrelenting confidence.
Sure you will, Jose. Sure you will.
