“I’m a six-foot-four, 270-pound super athlete. I’m a genetic freak,” Jose Canseco boasted Thursday during his guest appearance on Barstool’s Pardon My Take podcast. Canseco was so confident he’d win his “Rough ‘N Rowdy” fight with Barstool intern Billy Football, the former Oakland A’s star of “Bash Brothers” fame offered a friendly $500,000 wager with PMT host Dan “Big Cat” Katz (Big Cat did not accept).
The 56-year-old talked a big game but couldn’t back it up, losing in a matter of seconds Friday night in West Virginia. Canseco blamed his knockout loss on a lingering shoulder injury, though many weren’t buying that excuse. Dave Portnoy, the founder and face of Barstool Sports, openly accused Canseco of taking a dive, asserting he had no intention of actually fighting.
Portnoy, who was understandably livid by what he perceived as a shameless money grab, shared the payout details on Twitter while insisting future fight contracts with Barstool will include a “morality clause,” ensuring no one will ever try a stunt like the one Canseco pulled Friday night. Canseco, who has long been open about his use of performance-enhancing drugs (the former AL MVP admitted he still juices), has never been synonymous with integrity, making Friday’s farce par for the course.
Barstool Sportsbook refunded users’ money in acknowledgment of Canseco’s suspected dive, though the disgraced slugger still pocketed over a million dollars for his listless performance at Rough ‘N Rowdy. Despite MLB largely turning its back on Canseco, who exposed countless ex-teammates (fellow Bash Brother Mark McGwire among them) with his steroid revelations in the 2005 best-seller, Juiced, the former big-leaguer continues to make headlines, turning heads with his erratic behavior and well-publicized feuds with both Alex Rodriguez and Logan Paul with the latter in an on-again, off-again relationship with his daughter, Josie.
