Chicago Cubs minor leaguer Jesus Camargo-Corrales faces several felony drug charges after he was arrested on Wednesday.
According to a number of reports, Camargo was stopped for speeding and drifting into another lane in Colorado before deputies searched his vehicle and found 21 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.2 pounds of "suspected" oxycodone in a duffel bag.
According to the affidavit, Camargo was asked if there were any drugs in the car and responded that there were not, adding that he follows a strict anti-doping policy as a professional baseball player (via Darren Whitehead of 9News Denver). Camargo and his two passengers then consented to having the car searched, and K-9 Zane signaled to an area under the rear seat where the bag was found.
Along with the meth and oxycodone, there were baseball gloves, cleats and $1,000 in cash. Camargo's passengers were released after deputies determined they were not aware of the drugs in the car.
Camargo reportedly told officers that a friend called him and asked that he delivered a bag to Denver in exchange for $500, and that while he knew drugs were in the bag, he did not know what kind (via Tom Lotshaw of Vail Daily). He is currently being held in jail under $75,000 bond.
Camargo played for the Arizona League Cubs in 2015 — he was teammates with Javier Baez, among others — and has since spent time with the Eugene Emeralds, the South Bend Cubs and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, all of which are/were Cubs minor league affiliates (via Baseball Reference).
