Joe Buck is one of the most recognizable voices in sports. The longtime play-by-play broadcaster has called multiple Super Bowls and 24 World Series in his career, along with some golf broadcasts.
Last year, Buck made the decision to focus on football, saying that he feels like he’s done all that he could do with baseball. He even turned down an offer to call an MLB game for ESPN last season.
However, Buck is changing course and leaving that door open.
Buck joined Matt Spiegel on the new Audacy Original Podcast “The PBP: Voices of Baseball” and revealed that he thinks he will call MLB games again.
“I think I will (do baseball again). I’ve never said that before but I just feel like I’m 53, basically 54, I think it’s too early to say nevers at this point in my life,” Buck said (10:45 in player above). “I think at some point, I’ll get the itch again.”
Buck, who turned 54 in April, was the voice of the All-Star Game and World Series for MLB on FOX. But it wouldn’t be national broadcasting that Buck would want to return to.
“It would be local. Doing a handful of games in St. Louis, doing a handful of games if we move to Denver, doing a handful of games in Minnesota. Who knows,” he continued. “It’s not going to be ‘Hey, welcome to the World Series! This is my 25th.’ I’m done with that. That’s enough.”
While national broadcasting brings the spotlight, it’s the local angle that Buck enjoys more.
“It’s a totally different job, I think. It’s in many ways more fun,” he said. “The national stuff is more prestigious and it’s bigger and it comes with more money and it comes with more pressure. But the local guy is there representing the fan.
“I just remember my dad’s thing was two on and nobody out, ‘We need a triple play!’ You don’t say that when you’re doing – We? ‘We’ means John Smoltz and me. ‘We’ means those of us at FOX. There is no ‘we’ in national broadcasting.”
Buck may be done calling baseball games for now, but never say never.
