Mickey Callaway will not be in a major league clubhouse any time soon, possibly ever.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Wednesday that the Angels pitching coach has been immediately placed on the Ineligible List through at least the end of the 2022 season following the league’s investigation into allegations of sexual harassment.
The Angels have also officially fired Callaway as pitching coach.
“Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Callaway violated MLB’s policies, and that placement on the Ineligible List is warranted,” Manfred said in a statement. “We want to thank the many people who cooperated with our Department of Investigations (DOI) in their work, which spanned Mr. Callaway’s positions with three different Clubs. … Harassment has no place within Major League Baseball, and we are committed to providing an appropriate work environment for all those involved in our game.”
Manfred also said that all three clubs — the Mets, Indians and Angels — fully cooperated, which included providing emails and assisting with identifying key witnesses.
Allegations of Callaway’s inappropriate behavior were first revealed in a report in The Athletic back in February dating back to his time as Mets manager and pitching coach of the Cleveland Indians.
The allegations included sending inappropriate messages and lewd, unsolicited pictures as well as comments about the appearances of female employees.
The Angels suspended Callaway, although the pitching coach denied any wrongdoing.
In March, another report surfaced that Callaway’s behavior was an open secret within the Mets and Indians organization.
Callaway, 46, released a statement following Wednesday's announcement in which he supported the league's decision, but continued to reiterate it was not his intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable.
Callaway will have to apply for reinstatement.
Indians owner Paul Dolan also released a statement on the investigation:
