The Phillies have re-signed shortstop Didi Gregorius according to Jayson Stark. The deal is worth $28 million dollars for 2 years.
This comes several days after the Phillies signed J.T. Realmuto to a five year deal. It looks like the 2020 Phillies lineup that was a top-10 offense in baseball is due back for at least the next two seasons.
Gregorius was one of the last shortstops to come off the free agent market after several signed one year deals earlier this week. Marcus Semien signed an $18 million deal with the Blue Jays after Andrelton Simmons got $10.5 million from the Twins. Former Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis also inked a modest $1.5 million deal with the Orioles.
The Phillies showed interest in Simmons but ultimately went back to their 2020 shortstop who preformed well during the shortened season. Gregorius played in all 60 games, slugged 10 home runs and knocked in 40 runs, which ranked fifth among all shortstops. Gregorius was viewed as the best bat in the free agent group.
Last year, Gregorius signed a 1-year, $14 million deal hoping to secure a multi-year deal this offseason. Two years is modest for a 30-year-old, but he avoids a pending free agent class next season that will include Francisco Lindor, Trevor Story, Javier Baez, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Semien and Simmons.
