Steve Cohen and the Mets have surprised a lot of people this offseason. Cohen went out and made some big moves to not only maintain New York’s position in the National League but also improve upon it.
Cohen put his money where his mouth is with the contracts handed out to Carlos Correa – for now –, Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, and Justin Verlander, plus guys like Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana to round out the Mets’ rotation.
Former Mets broadcaster Wayne Randazzo joined WEEI’s Rob Bradford on the Audacy Original Podcast “Baseball Isn’t Boring” and gave his thoughts on Cohen’s offseason and mindset.
“I think after how last season ended with the team getting knocked out early and with the division title falling out of their grips, Steve Cohen’s going to do what it takes to win,” Randazzo said (5:35 in player above). “He cares about one thing and that’s pleasing the Mets fanbase with a championship team, and he’s going to go after it with everything he’s got.”
“Everything you’ve read about this guy and everything you know about his work in the hedge fund world, this is who he is. He’s going to go after exactly what he wants and he’s going to do what he can,” Randazzo continued.
Cohen has made his mark in the hedge fund world and is looking to do the same with the Mets in the baseball world. Unfortunately, it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison.
“This is a different sort of thing than what he’s used to because all the money and all the things he’s putting into – the resources – they don’t guarantee a championship. They don’t guarantee being number one,” said Randazzo. “But they guarantee you a spot at the table and I think the Mets are going to have that spot when it comes to October next year, too, assuming this Correa thing goes through. I think that’s a move that really puts them in the driver’s seat.”
Correa, assuming he’s signed, is the cherry on top of a great offseason, but it’s not going to be a cakewalk for the Mets in 2023.
“It’s going to be an even tougher division in 2023 than it was in 2022 because the Phillies are probably going to be more competitive when it comes to the division title than they were this past season,” Randazzo said. “It’ll be interesting but I think the Mets realized that they just needed to get into the playoffs, they’ve got a lot of the tools they need to get there, and I’m not surprised at all that he’s attacked this offseason with the fervor that he has.”
Cohen certainly attacked this offseason to the tune of over $800 million as he blew past the luxury tax – and then some.
