The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs have had conversations about a trade that would likely be the biggest in the sport in advance of the Aug. 2 trade deadline should it be completed.

Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reports that the Mets and Cubs "had ongoing discussions" about a trade that would send Willson Contreras and David Robertson to Queens.

The Mets' top two prospects -- catcher Francisco Alvarez and third baseman/outfielder Brett Baty -- are not on the table, Ragazzo reports. Seemingly, though, the Cubs could get a pretty respectable return for Contreras and Robertson, both of whom are set to become free agents after the season.

Contreras was the an All-Star this year for the third time in his career, and remains one of the better catchers in baseball. The 30-year-old has homered 14 times and has an .847 OPS in 2022. Given that Alvarez -- the No. 2 prospect in baseball -- is at Triple-A, Contreras would likely just be a rental. But he would get a chance to join a Mets team that is 59-37 and seems like a legitimate World Series contender.

Meanwhile, Robertson, a long-time Yankee, has revived his career at the age of 37. In 35 games this season, Robertson has a 1.83 ERA and 3.25 FIP. While he's been the closer for the Cubs, he would become a set-up man for Edwin Díaz if traded to the Mets.
