Top 10 MLB second basemen for 2022 season
As we race towards the 2022 MLB season, here is Audacy Sports' countdown of the 10 best second basemen in the sport for this upcoming season...

10. Jazz Chisholm, Miami Marlins
Age During 2022 Season: 24
2021 Statistics: .248/.303/.425 with 18 home runs, 53 RBIs, 34 walks, .728 OPS, 96 OPS+, five defensive runs saved, six outs above average and a 1.6 fWAR
While D.J. LeMahieu, Jean Segura, Kolten Wong and Jeff McNeil are among the second basemen that are more accomplished than Chisholm, he's an electric player that we expect to take a step towards being an All-Star for a talented young Marlins team in 2022.

9. Chris Taylor, Los Angeles Dodgers
Age During 2022 Season: 31
2021 Statistics: .254/.344/.438 with 20 home runs, 73 RBIs, 63 walks, .782 OPS, 110 OPS+, two defensive runs saved, zero outs above average and a 3.1 fWAR
Taylor is a Swiss Army Knife that actually saw his largest chunk of playing time in center field in 2021. However, if Cody Bellinger bounces back in 2022, Taylor figures to see more action at second base and in left field this season. The Dodgers brought back Taylor on a four-year/$60 million deal this offseason, and he figures to be one of their most valuable players.

8. Jonathan India, Cincinnati Reds
Age During 2022 Season: 25
2021 Statistics: .269/.376/.459 with 21 home runs, 69 RBIs, 71 walks, .835 OPS, 113 OPS+, zero defensive runs saved, -7 outs above average and a 3.9 fWAR
Last year's National League Rookie of the Year didn't have great defensive metrics, but made an immediate impact offensively. The Reds won't have much in the way of firepower around India, but a lack of talent on his team could mean that he makes his first All-Star Game appearance in 2022.

7. Jorge Polanco, Minnesota Twins
Age During 2022 Season: 28
2021 Statistics: .269/.323/.503 with 33 home runs, 98 RBIs, 45 walks, .826 OPS, 125 OPS+, three defensive runs saved, -1 defensive runs saved and a 3.9 fWAR
Polanco was an All-Star in 2019, but actually had the finest season of his career in 2021. He's a better second baseman than shortstop, but is an elite run producer regardless of what middle infield position he's playing.

6. Jake Cronenworth, San Diego Padres
Age During 2022 Season: 28
2021 Statistics: .266/.340/.460 with 21 home runs, 71 RBIs, 55 walks, .800 OPS, 122 OPS+, five defensive runs saved, zero outs above average and a 4.4 fWAR
Cronenworth didn't make his Major League Debut until he was 26, but he's wasted no time in becoming one of the key contributors for the Padres. Cronenworth finished in a tie for runner-up in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2020, before making an All-Star Game appearance in 2021. Part of Cronenworth's value is that he can play multiple positions, but he's probably best at second base.

5. Ozzie Albies, Atlanta Braves
Age During 2022 Season: 25
2021 Statistics: .259/.310/.488 with 30 home runs, 106 RBIs, 47 walks, .799 OPS, 105 OPS+, one defensive runs saved, one outs above average and a 4.2 fWAR
Albies is already a two-time All-Star, two time Silver Slugger Award winner and has won a World Series, all before his age-25 season. The scariest part is that the Braves will pay Albies just $26 million over the next four seasons, with affordable club options for 2026 and 2027.

4. Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks
Age During 2022 Season: 28
2021 Statistics: .318/.377/.532 with 14 home runs, 50 RBIs, 31 walks, .909 OPS, 143 OPS+, zero defensive runs saved, -2 outs above average and a 2.9 fWAR
Already one of the better players in Diamondbacks history, Marte's biggest issue over the past two seasons has been staying on the field. The last time he did, Marte finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 2019. He'll make only $8 million in 2022 -- the final guaranteed year of his contract -- but the Diamondbacks (or whoever he's playing for by then) are certain to pick up his club options in 2023 and 2024.

3. Brandon Lowe, Tampa Bay Rays
Age During 2022 Season: 27
2021 Statistics: .247/.340/.523 with 39 home runs, 99 RBIs, 68 walks, .863 OPS, 142 OPS+, -7 defensive runs saved, -4 outs above average and a 5.2 fWAR
Defensive metrics suggest that Lowe may be better suited to play another position, but he's such a valuable offensive player that you'll live with whatever flaws he has as a second basemen. The Rays have Lowe under contractual control through the 2026 season, which makes him valuable to a team unwilling to spend a ton and could mean he becomes an appealing trade candidate at some point in the future.

2. Jose Altuve, Houston Astros
Age During 2022 Season: 32
2021 Statistics: .278/.350/.489 with 31 home runs, 83 RBIs, 66 walks, .839 OPS, 127 OPS+, -3 defensive runs saved, five outs above average and a 5.2 fWAR
Whatever questions existed about Altuve after he struggled during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season were erased when he made his seventh All-Star team in 2021. The former American League MVP is one of the greatest players in Astros history, and is putting together statistics that are in line with Hall of Fame second basemen.

1. Marcus Semien, Texas Rangers
Age During 2022 Season: 31
2021 Statistics: .265/.334/.538 with 45 home runs, 102 RBIs, 66 walks, .873 OPS, 133 OPS+, 11 defensive runs saved, seven outs above average and a 6.6 fWAR
Semien disappointed in his final season with the A's in 2020, but parlayed a massive 2021 season with the Toronto Blue Jays into a seven-year/$175 million free-agent contract with the Rangers this offseason. Semien has been an American League MVP finalist in two of the last three seasons, and the bet that the Rangers are making is he'll continue to put up that type of production.
