Trevor Story thought he was going to make it through without having surgery. He was wrong.
The Red Sox announced their infielder would be out of action for the start of the 2023 season after undergoing an operation on his right throwing elbow.
Players who have undergone this procedure - including outfielder Brandon Guyer and pitcher Rich Hill - have typically experienced a timeline of 3-6 months before returning to action.
It is an operation that has become popular in recent years for players who are trying to avoid the extremes of Tommy John surgery.
Despite concerns over Story's elbow at the time he signed six-year, $140 million deal, the ailment never was the cause of the 30-year-old's absence from the lineup. A hand injury suffered in July was the primary cause for Story to only play in 94 games in 2022.
Story admitted on the Bradfo Sho podcast that he was suffering through elbow discomfort in May of last season, but felt like he had discovered a manageable plan that would help deal with the issue.
"I did a lot of work in the offseason. Really just readjusted my routine, get locked on that. That has helped a lot. .. There is a lot that goes into it," Story told the Bradfo Sho podcast. "Can’t just say it’s one thing. Really just reworked my routine. Yeah, man, I feel really good about it now. Last year was a tough year."
