Whatever level of frustration that Franchy Cordero has over what's been a disappointing start to his time with the Boston Red Sox, he appeared to channel it into one swing Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Following seven shutout innings from Phillies righty Zack Wheeler, Cordero led off the top of the eighth inning with a 474-foot home run to get the Red Sox on the board:
Cordero's home run was the furthest ball that's been hit at Citizens Bank Park since the 2015-launch of Statcast, as MLB.com's Todd Zolecki noted. Cordero's bomb topped the marks of Phillies greats like Ryan Howard and Bryce Harper. Only Yermín Mercedes - who has a 485-foot home run in 2021 - has hit a longer blast this season.
Despite Cordero's home run, the Red Sox weren't able to finish off a weekend sweep of the Phillies. Led by 12 strikeouts from Wheeler, the Phillies defeated the Red Sox 6-2. Wheeler, who now has a 2.38 ERA after 10 starts, is a legitimate candidate to make his first All-Star team.
