(670 The Score) White Sox fans voiced their frustrations with manager Tony La Russa with chants calling for him to be fired during the 10th inning of an 11-9 loss to the Rangers at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Chants of “Fire Tony” were heard clearly throughout the ballpark and on the television broadcast as the White Sox allowed four runs in the top of the 10th inning, proving to be the difference in a game they led 5-0 as late as the fifth inning.
The 77-year-old La Russa has come under scrutiny as the White Sox have struggled this season as defending AL Central champions. Chicago fell to 27-30 with the loss to Texas on Saturday.
“I appreciate they want us to win, and when we don’t win, they’re unhappy,” La Russa told reporters after the game.
La Russa drew criticism during an 11-9 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday during which he elected to walk star shortstop Trea Turner with a 1-2 count and face slugger Max Muncy, who hit a three-run home run and yelled in the direction of the White Sox dugout.
After that loss, La Russa was defiant in defending his decision while inviting others to disagree as they wished.
The White Sox hired La Russa before the 2021 season, this after he had been retired for 10 years. A Hall of Fame inductee in 2014, La Russa is 120-99 during this second tenure in Chicago. He also managed the White Sox from 1979-’86 before managing the A’s (1986-’95) and Cardinals (1996-2011).
