Yankees need to trade for catcher after ‘mind-boggling’ handling of Jose Trevino injury

The hits keep coming for the New York Yankees. All-Star catcher Jose Trevino will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ligament in his right wrist.

Trevino revealed that he had been dealing with a wrist issue and thought that he could play through the pain. However, he now needs surgery and expects to be ready for next season.

That leaves the Yankees with Kyle Higashioka and call-up Ben Rortvedt behind the dish. That’s not exactly a tremendous catching duo for a hopeful playoff team.

WFAN’s Keith McPherson and Chris McMonigle of Audacy’s original podcast “BXB” discussed the Yankees’ catching situation and called out the team for letting players struggle through injuries.

“The Yankees, I think, have to bring another catcher in,” McPherson said (14:20 in player above). “I just don’t think you can go the rest of the season and into the postseason thinking that Kyle Higashioka and Ben Rortvedt can get the job done.”

McPherson pointed out that some fans are calling for Austin Wells, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, to be given a chance in the majors. However, he is hitting just .234 with a .795 OPS despite 12 home runs in 66 minor-league games this season – 58 of which came at Double-A.

“People are talking about sending Austin Wells up. No! That’s not the answer either,” McPherson continued. “You need a major-league-caliber catcher, and it’d be nice if you can find a guy with some offensive pop, power with the bat.”

McMonigle mentioned Mets catcher Omar Narvaez as a possibility if the Yankees would be willing to deal with their cross-city rivals.

He’s also fed up with how the Yankees have handled some of their injuries this season.

“I don’t necessarily expect the Yankees to tell me everything… I understand they want to protect their players. They don’t want us out every day asking questions ‘Well you’re letting him play with a torn wrist?’ I get that,” McMonigle said. “I have a problem with letting him play with a torn wrist for this long. I don’t care what they tell me, they should be smarter than to let him play. He looked awful all year. Awful all year.”

Trevino batted .210 with a .570 OPS and four home runs in 55 games this season, so it may not be that hard to find an upgrade.

“You’re struggling offensively and you’re allowing this guy to go out there and play with a torn wrist the entire season? You traded for Ben Rortvedt,” he continued. “Give this guy at least an IL stint and let’s see what Ben Rortvedt can do. Why are you forcing Trevino with a torn wrist? It’s just mind-boggling.”

Rortvedt is 2-for-10 in his young Yankees career after batting .286 with a .900 OPS in 29 games at Double-A Somerset this season.
