Domingo German’s once-promising MLB career has come to an end. The 27-year-old appeared to announce his retirement in an Instagram story Friday night, writing “Me fui del baseball. Gracias mi gente,” which translated to English means, “I left baseball. Thanks my people.” Speaking to reporters, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he had heard about German’s Instagram post but had nothing more to say on the matter.

German led the Yankees with 18 victories last season, good for fourth-most in the major leagues, but was placed on administrative leave in September following allegations of domestic violence. The 6’2” right-hander, who made his big-league debut in 2017 following a seven-year stint in the minors, was eventually suspended 81 games, the equivalent of half a season. German served 18 games of his suspension in 2019, leaving him with 63 games remaining. Due to MLB’s abbreviated schedule amid the coronavirus, German would not have been eligible to suit up in 2020.

Assuming German follows through on his retirement plans, the Dominican Republic native will finish his career with 20 wins, 11 losses and a 4.52 ERA across 55 major-league appearances including 38 starts, all as a member of the Yankees. It’s a sad end to what could have been a productive career for German, who got his start in the Marlins’ farm system after signing as an international free agent in 2009. According to Spotrac.com, German netted just over $1 million in career earnings ($1,067,551).

Even without German, New York boasts a strong starting staff with Gerrit Cole, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, J.A. Happ and left-hander Jordan Montgomery expected to round out the Bombers’ 2020 rotation.
