The Philadelphia 76ers added some depth to their bench on Tuesday.
The Sixers signed free agent center Montrezl Harrell on a two-year, $5.2 million deal, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal includes a player option for the 2023-24 season.
Harrell, 28, spent last season with both Washington and Charlotte, averaging 13.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in 23.1 minutes per game.
His best season came in 2019-20, when he won the Sixth Man of the Year Award, while playing under Doc Rivers for the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 27.8 minutes per game.
Bench depth is crucial for the Sixers, who ranked 28th in the league in bench scoring last season, but also because it gives them a reliable option for when Joel Embiid is off the floor or needs rest.
Harrell remained a free agent due to some off-court troubles as he faced a felony charge of marijuana trafficking in Kentucky, but that was reduced to a misdemeanor last week, to which he pleaded guilty. If Harrell remains out of legal trouble for 12 months he can have it expunged from his record.
Per Wojnarowski, James Harden helped recruit Harrell to Philadelphia. Harrell and Harden were teammates for two seasons with the Houston Rockets.
