Draymond Green has been making headlines with his new podcast this season, but he might have just made his boldest declaration yet.

In a clip from his latest Draymond Green Show episode that’s going viral on Twitter, the outspoken veteran said he would skip a Warriors game to go see LeBron James break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record in person.

LeBron recently passed Karl Malone for the No. 2 spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. James currently has 36,985 points, which trails Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) by 1,402 points. At his current pace, James break it midway through next season, perhaps in January or February.

“I can’t wait to see that,” Green said. “And I hope – Steve Kerr, I’m throwing this out there right now – if LeBron James is passing the all-time scoring record and we have a game, I’m going to LeBron’s game and witness history. That’s what we doing Coach Kerr.”

Wonder how Kerr received that message.

Green is a basketball historian and ultimately one of the biggest fans of the game. I understand the gravity of the moment, but I think it’d be a bad look if Green would rather be in the stands to cheer on one of his chief adversaries instead of with his teammates on the floor – if that’s what it came down to.

Perhaps the dueling player-broadcaster role is messing with Green’s understanding of his position in the game, but he’s still in it. He’s still part of it, he’s not above it.

Chris Chiozza or Quinndary Weatherspoon would probably never play in an NBA game again if they skipped out on a Warriors contest to go cheer on LeBron, no matter the occasion. Green has a more impressive career resume than the two-way players and is probably a Hall of Famer, but he shouldn’t separate himself from the other 16 guys on the Warriors’ roster.

Green’s unbridled appreciation for the history of basketball is admirable, but skipping out on one of his own games would damage the integrity of the sport he holds dear.
