DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys may not have officially informed the media of their decision to move on from Jason Garrett, but their actions are speaking loudly enough.
After interviewing veteran NFL head coaches Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis on Saturday, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Cowboys will also "take the temperature" of current Oklahoma head coach, Lincoln Riley, and his interest in leaving Norman for an opportunity in the NFL.
Riley is known as one of the most innovative offensive minds in all of college football, and since taking over for Bob Stoops, has turned Oklahoma into the most consitent offensive juggernauts in the country,
Seen as a quarterback guru, Riley has also molded three consecutive quarterbacks into Heisman trophy finalists, including back-to-back winners in Baker Mayfield in 2017, and Kyler Murray in 2018.
In his three seasons as head coach for the Sooners, Riley has gone 36-6 overall, won three consecutive Big 12 Championships, and made three straight College Football Playoff appearances.
Riley did struggle in the playoffs, however, losing in all three appearances to the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and most recently, the LSU Tigers.
This past season, Riley signed a five-year, $32 million extension to stay with the Sooners through the 2024 season, making him the ninth-highest paid coach in college football, just ahead of Texas coach Tome Herman.
Rapoport also reported that Garrett has informed all of the assistants still under contract that they do not need to report to the Star until the situation regarding his job status is resolved.
Garrett is still technically under contract until the 14th of January.
