Somehow, the Atlanta Falcons’ Super Bowl LI loss to the New England Patriots continues to sting even more as time goes on.
In a recent interview with 12 News in Phoenix, former Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, now with the Arizona Cardinals, revealed an interesting conversation he had with his new teammate, Robert Alford, who was on that Falcons team.
Apparently, the two have talked about that game and Alford revealed that the Falcons were actually celebrating at halftime with a 21-3 lead on the Patriots.
“I talked to him about it, I asked him if he wanted his ring back,” Butler said. “He told me a story, he said he was in the locker room at halftime, he told me he was about to pop a bottle and things like that, it was so funny. And then we came back and beat them.”

Alford played a big role in Atlanta’s dominant first half, intercepting Tom Brady for a touchdown to put the Falcons up 21-0.
Yet, the 21-3 halftime lead was not even Atlanta’s largest of the game. As Falcons fans are so often reminded, they actually led 28-3 in the third quarter before suffering one of the greatest collapses (or comebacks, if you’re a Patriots fan) of all time.
“I’m just imagining him at halftime,” Butler continued. “Robert, he’s a funny guy, got a lot of energy, tells a lot of jokes, and he told me at halftime they were in there dancing and hooraying and then we came back and beat them, so I think that was pretty fun.”
