The Giants have to make tough decisions this offseason after news of the new salary cap put the team nearly $8 million over the cap, and they just made a big one.
The team announced that it had released veteran guard Kevin Zeitler on Wednesday afternoon, the oldest member of the team’s offensive line in 2020.
Zeitler, who just turned 31, started every game for the Giants over the past two seasons, but with New York up against the new $182.5 million salary cap, the team decided to part ways with its durable lineman to clear $12 million in cap space.
The Giants franchise tagged Leonard Williams on Tuesday, which meant cuts were coming. Zeitler will likely be one of the more notable cuts, as he has been one of the team’s best offensive lineman since coming over from Cleveland in 2019 in a trade for Olivier Vernon, part of the deal that sent Odell Beckham to the Browns.
The Giants had the worst pass-blocking line in the league last season, per Pro Football Focus, but Zeitler was the team’s top-rated blocker over the last two seasons.
