The Jacksonville Jaguars' latest rebuild will include hiring a new head coach.
The Jaguars, who own the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, announced the firing of coach Doug Marrone after four-plus years at the helm on Monday.
Marrone, 56, went 1-15 in his final season on the sidelines for the Jags, marking the team's third consecutive losing years after a promising start to his Jacksonville career.
Owner Shad Khan announced the move in a statement, and wished Marrone the best in future endeavors.
In the process of winning just one game this season -- a Week 1 stunner against the Indianapolis Colts -- the Jags secured the first overall pick in this year's draft and, presumably, a shot at taking Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The chance to take Lawrence has already been fueling rumors about the team's potential direction, with several prominent college coaches popping up as candidates to perhaps make the jump to the NFL.
It's little wonder football observers are spinning up such scenarios to make the franchise relevant again. The Jags have struggled to find a franchise signal caller seemingly since the days of Mark Brunell, cycling through a series of mostly disappointing draft picks and journeymen.
The Jags went 10-6 and qualified for the playoffs in Marrone's first year, 2016, going all the way to the AFC title game before they were eliminated by the New England Patriots.
But the team never seemed to recapture its magic, and several key contributors from the playoff team were cut loose last offseason owing to salary cap considerations.
Marrone also had a two-year stint as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, where he went 15-17. For his career, the Syracuse alum has a 38-60 record.
