DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has joined Liberty Christian School as the head coach of their football program, the private school located in Argyle announced Monday morning.

"Liberty Christian School is excited to announce our new Head Football Coach Jason Witten. Jason, former Dallas Cowboy tight end and long-time Liberty parent will be joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff as Head Football Coach. It’s a great day to be a Warrior!"

The news comes after Witten retired last week after playing 17 seasons (16 in Dallas) in the NFL. He is the Cowboys franchise leader in receiving yards (12,977 yards) and catches (1,215).

Witten had previously expressed an interest in a transition into coaching after his playing career was finished. It was always believed that mentoring younger players, whether that be in college or high school, was his calling. Witten will now get the opportunity to coach two of his children, who attend the school.

“A coach once told me, ‘The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example,'" Witten said in a statement to ESPN about his decision to retire. "As I hang it up, I walk away knowing that for 17 seasons I gave it my absolute all. I am proud of my accomplishments as a football player on the field and the example I tried to set off of it. Football is a great game that has taught me many valuable lessons, and I look forward to passing on that knowledge to the next generation.”

Witten was an 11-time Pro Bowler and a two-time First-Team All-Pro. He won the league's Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2012 and was elected into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will induct Witten into the team's Ring of Honor at some point and he's eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2026.
