CLEVELAND, Ohio – Myles Garrett took off unimpeded with eyes on Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.
The Browns star defensive end wanted to congratulate Rudolph on a well-played game that saw the Steelers’ backup quarterback throw for 315 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 24-22 loss to Cleveland.
“I just told him good game – he played a hell of a game – and we will see you all in a week,” Garrett said. “He played tough. He had 300 yards and a couple of touchdowns. He played very well, and he kept them in it to the very end. Had to show a little praise that he did well in this game and he was able to make some big plays for them.”
All eyes were on Garrett and Rudolph Sunday following an ugly incident last November that saw Garrett hit Rudolph in the head with his own helmet touching off a melee that resulted in over $1 million in fines and an indefinite suspension for Garrett that lasted for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski made Garrett, who was named Cleveland’s 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, the team’s game captain for the week Sunday.
Garrett had a relatively quiet afternoon finishing with four tackles and a pass deflection.
The 2017 No. 1 overall pick has done a lot over the last 14 months since that fateful Thursday night to repair his image, on and off the field, and Sunday was just another opportunity to do so.
“Myles came over and said, ‘Good game’ postgame and that is all it was,” Rudolph said. “I told him good luck and that I had a lot of respect for him.”
Rudolph also took to Twitter to show that he's moved on.
The Browns clinched their first playoff berth since 2002 Sunday and will face the Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh next weekend.
