Last season, the Jets had an exciting young core of skill players, something that certainly helped lure Aaron Rodgers to New York.
Now, the arsenal of weapons has gotten another addition.
The Jets signed running back Dalvin Cook on Monday evening, according to multiple reports. Cook is one of the most dangerous running backs in the league, but was a cap casualty of the Minnesota Vikings this offseason.
Despite getting cut, Cook remains an effective back, rushing for 1,173 yards last season with eight touchdowns. He has good burst and is powerful on the goal line, and his addition makes the Jets’ backfield with Breece Hall all the more potent.
The Jets even being able to land Cook was partially the product of a running back free agency market that currently is a mess. Rodgers told Boomer & Gio he’s glad to have Cook in the fold, while also lamenting the state of the position.
“Yeah, I’m excited about him,” Rodgers said. “The running back market, it’s been really wild to watch, hasn’t it, just the devaluation of those guys. … They’re three-down guys. The running back has to be – they’re in the blocking scheme, they’re in the run game, they’re in the pass game. They’ve got to know checkdown rules and adjustments – and also go out and put your head down and get rocked 20 times a game.
“I think that’s something that I don’t know how you remedy that. Seems there’s some backs maybe feeling like there’s a little collusion this year, which … I would too”
Rodgers, having spent his entire career in the NFC North prior to this season, has seen plenty of Cook in recent years. Rodgers recalled watching Cook start the second half of a game with a 75-yard touchdown in which he went untouched, so no doubt he’s dreaming about him doing the same thing in green this season.
