Yet another game has been called off due to COVID-19.
Saturday’s matchup between No. 3 Ohio State and Maryland has been canceled due to an elevated number of COVID-19 cases within the Maryland Football program, the team announced.
The game will not be rescheduled.
The school announced that eight football players tested positive for the coronavirus and the team has also paused all activities.
“There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Maryland Director of Athletics Damon Evans said in a statement. “We realize that this news is disappointing to all of the Maryland fans out there who were looking forward to the Terps taking on an outstanding Ohio State team, but the responsible thing for us to do is pause football activities, given the number of positive cases currently in our program.”
Ohio State-Maryland is the latest big game to be cancelled this weekend due to COVID-19.
No. 1 Alabama vs. LSU, No. 5 Texas A&M at Tennessee, No. 12 Georgia at Missouri and No. 24 Auburn at Mississippi State have all also been called off.
The Ohio State-Maryland game was shaping up to be a highly anticipated matchup with Maryland coming off a big upset over Penn State, led by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa – the younger brother of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa.
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, were looking to improve to 4-0 behind potential first-round pick Justin Fields.
Ohio State will instead turn its attention to next week when they host No. 10 Indiana.
