While it is only spring, but we may have a winner for the craziest play of the college football season.
During Saturday’s CAA game between Villanova and Delaware — who were playing each other after the conference moved its season to the spring due to COVID — Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith completed one of the most unlikeliest touchdown passes you’ll ever see.
With three minutes remaining and the Wildcats on the goal line, Smith rolled to his right when he appeared to get tripped up for a sack. But as Smith stumbled to the ground and his back turned away from the end zone, he flung the ball up into the air, which landed right into the hands of teammate Charlie Gilroy for a 1-yard touchdown.
It’s one of those plays you have to see to believe.
The touchdown pulled Villanova to make it a one score game, but Delaware held on for a 27-20 victory to improve to 5-0 while the Wildcats fell to 2-2.
Despite not getting the win, it was one heckuva a play — one that will be tough anyone else to top the rest of the year.
