As the spooky season approaches, local haunted attraction Mad World is busier than ever: preparing for their best season yet, celebrating their Ten Years of Fear, and fighting COVID-19.
Brothers and co-owners Joseph and Tim Thompson are confident in their attraction's scares and its safety.
Joseph Thompson explained that controlling the influx of people at Mad World is simple and allows for social distancing already in many ways.
"Mad World is an outdoor attraction and everyone has the liberty to have their own personal space to spread out as they will, being that this is over five acres. Exposure time at Mad World is very limited; people are moving throughout their experience as opposed to sitting in a area for a long period of time," Thompson said.
Thompson further said a big advantage for their attraction is that many of their customers are from the same household, which will make it easier for them to socially distance groups in a queue as opposed to attempting to distance individuals.
The Thompson brothers have shown pride and innovation in their work over the years, always finding new ways to keep scares fresh; this year that innovation has also found a heightened level of safety.
Thompson said many of their actors already wear masks, but for those actors without a mask built into their costume they have invested in screen-printed masks that mimic the makeup of those actors.
Other safety precautions include screening every actor and staff member each day, sanitizing high touch surfaces in the haunt throughout each night, and fog sanitizing the whole haunt each night once they have finished for the evening.
Customers are not required to wear masks but are encouraged to buy tickets online ahead of time to decrease time waiting in lines.
Thompson said purchasing tickets ahead of time secures a spot to get in to the attraction; he expects turn out to be bigger than ever this year as they celebrate their Ten Years of Fear.
Mad World will open on September 11 and run for a total of 25 days on select dates.
