(Greenville SC) In recognition of America Recycles Day, the City of Greenville is hosting a free electronics recycling event this Saturday, November 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Works campus, located at 475 Fairforest Way.
At this special event, city residents and businesses can drop off the following items for free: TVs, computer monitors, keyboards, mice, wires, circuit boards, CPUs scanners and printers. There is a limit of 10 items per person.
The public is encouraged to remove sensitive information from hard drives before dropping them off. Event personnel will not be able to wipe hard drives on-site.
Unwanted electronics are one of the nation's fastest-growing waste streams. Often called e-scrap, electronics contain potentially hazardous materials such as lead and mercury that can pose a risk to human health and the environment if not properly managed.
In 2010, South Carolina passed legislation that banned the disposal of specific electronics in solid waste landfills. Electronics also contain materials such as precious metals that can be recovered through responsible recycling. All electronics collected at the event will be transported to a Certified Electronics Recycler.
