A deputy critically injured in a Spartanburg County shooting Tuesday afternoon has died of his wounds. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has identified the Deputy as Austin Derek Aldridge. The 25 year old deputy died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center just before 9:30 Tuesday night.
The incident began just before 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, deputies responded to a home for a domestic disturbance call in the Oak Forest Subdivision. Lt. Kevin Bobo says a deputy was shot when he approached the home and the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. The Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Duane Heard. Neighbors then gave description of Heard and his vehicle, which was later spotted on Anderson Mill Road heading towards Highway 290.
Another deputy attempted to stop the Heard's vehicle, but he fired at that deputy, who then returned fire. Heard continued driving on Anderson Mill Road, then crashed near the Highway 290 intersection and ran into the woods. A perimeter was set up, the SWAT team and K-9 units were called in, and Heard was later apprehended. Heard was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. SLED has been called in to investigate, which is standard protocol in officer involved shootings.
