Greenlink is partnering with Proterra, the Greenville-based electric bus manufacturer and leading innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, to offer Fare Free Day on Thursday, February 4, or National Transit Equity Day, in celebration of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks, born on February 4, 1913, is an iconic leader of the Civil Rights Movement whose activism to end racial segregation, including refusing to give up her seat at the front of a Montgomery, Alabama bus, inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the broader civil rights movement.

Proterra’s sponsorship of Fare Free Day will allow Greenlink to provide free service for all passengers on the fixed bus routes and free paratransit trips for existing Greenville Area Paratransit (GAP) clients on February 4. According to Greenlink Director James Keel, the partnership with Proterra is a great example of how the business community can support access to transportation solutions. “We are excited to work with Proterra to recognize Rosa Parks’ actions and further raise awareness of the importance of equitable mobility. Safe, affordable, reliable transportation that is accessible to all provides our community with the infrastructure to help Greenville County residents get to work, school, health care and other daily needs,” said Keel.

“At Proterra, our vision is to deliver clean, quiet transportation for all,” said Kelly Scheib, Proterra’s Vice President of Human Resources. “As we celebrate the legacy of Rosa Parks, we are reminded of the importance of public transit in our community.  Disadvantaged communities disproportionately bear the burden of air pollution and lack of access to transit solutions. That’s why ensuring public access to transportation that protects our health and environment is paramount. Proterra is proud to partner with Greenlink to raise awareness of transit equity as we work toward our collective goal of clean air and healthy communities driven by zero-emission transportation.”

Since 2011, Proterra has maintained its East Coast Operations and largest electric bus manufacturing facility in Greenville. In 2019, Proterra delivered four battery-electric buses to Greenlink that primarily service Route 502 and Route 510.

Greenlink passengers can use the Google Transit app at www.ridegreenlink.com to plan their free trips on February 4. Customers are also encouraged to download the FindGreenlink app in the Android or iOS app store to get real-time arrival information for the buses.
