4 people test positive for COVID-19 after receiving both doses of the vaccine

Despite receiving both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, four people in Oregon have tested positive for the novel virus.

Health officials state that the cases have been reported in Yamhill and Lane Counties.

However, due to the vaccine, the illnesses in the individuals range from “asymptomatic to mild."

“We are working with our local and federal public health partners to investigate and determine case origin,” OR Health Authority tweeted.

Additionally, “genome sequencing” is underway with results expected in the next week.

In this specific instance, the individuals got sick with the virus at least 14 days after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.

And while there are no reports of COVID-19 among the vast majority of those who have gotten both doses, the Health Authority states that more cases of post-vaccine infections – known as “breakthrough cases – could occur.

Another breakthrough case was reported in Charlotte. WCNC-TV noted that the person also reported mild symptoms and did not need to be hospitalized.

"Based on what we know about vaccines for other diseases and early data from clinical trials, experts believe that getting a Covid-19 vaccine may also help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get the virus. ... Getting as many Oregonians as possible vaccinated remains a critical objective to ending the pandemic,” the authority tweeted.

The vaccine helps build up your immunity and lessens symptoms. “Vaccines work with your immune system so your body will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed,” the CDC posted

However, since it typically takes a few weeks after vaccination for the body to build up protection, a person can still contract COVID-19 after vaccination.

Therefore, the agency advises that everyone who has been vaccinated adhere to certain safety measures including wearing face masks, social distancing, and avoiding crowded spots with poor ventilation.

Per the agency, those that are fully vaccinated do not have to quarantine within three months of receiving their last dose as long as they don’t develop symptoms.

While many have expressed a sense of relief following the rollout of the vaccine, a recent poll shows that nearly 25% of Americans have said they would never get the coronavirus vaccine, leaving themselves at risk of infection.

Those who meet local and state qualifications to get vaccinated can do so at several retailers and pharmacies like CVS and Walmart.
