Piers Morgan stormed off the set of “Good Morning Britain” during a tense moment in which one of his co-presenters criticized him for his recent comments about Meghan Markle. Then, the famous host quit the show
The controversial British broadcaster took himself off the air, ITV announced Tuesday in a statement according to the Deadline.
"Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.," the statement reads.
The decision comes just after Morgan accused Markle of lying about the royal family's racism and her own mental health struggles. In a recent clip, Morgan can be seen storming off the set of the show after co-presenter Alex Beresford challenged Morgan's thoughts on Markle.
In a clip of the moment which happened on Tuesday, the TV personality can be seen getting up from his seat as he exclaims “I’m done with this” and walks off the broadcast’s main stage.
Beresford called his behavior “absolutely diabolical.”
Once Morgan was off the set, Beresford continued: “I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit there and listen, 6:30 to 7 o'clock yesterday was incredibly hard to watch.”
In the minutes leading up to the explosive moment, Beresford addressed Morgan’s frequent criticism of Markle, which we became more vocal in recent days amid the former royal’s bombshell tell-all interview with Oprah.
“I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this program, and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off,” Beresford said. “Has she said anything about you after she cut you off? She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. And yet you continue to trash her.”
Morgan later tweeted that he was “annoyed” and “went for a little cool-down, and came back to finish the discussion.”
He also later added: “I just prefer not to sit there listening to colleagues call me diabolical.”
On Sunday, Morgan called Markle and Prince Harry’s interview “vile destructive self-serving nonsense,” and said, “for Harry to let her take down his family and the Monarchy like this is shameful.”
After the incident, Beresford followed up to remark on why he felt he had to speak out.
Beresford tweeted: “I wish I had the privilege to sit on the fence. In order for me to do that I would have to strip myself of my identity and that’s not something I can do. It’s not any of our places to pick apart claims of racism in order to make us to feel more comfortable.”
